Capri

Visitors to Capri fall easily under its spell. Unspoilt nature, stunning sunsets and fabulous food make it easy. Even seasoned shoppers feel at home, since the island offers enough high-end boutiques to make Paris and Milan blush. Once the exclusive playground of shipping magnates and society types, it has become a must-see stop on the mass-tourism circuit. But despite the recent incursion of poorly attired tourists, the Piazzetta remains one of the best places in the world to people watch.

01
Essentials

01 Sharing the island's beauty with 60,000 day-trippers can be avoided if you book a room in spring or early autumn.
02 Crowds still getting you down? Head for the hills and the town of Anacapri, the island's low-key alternative.
03 Skip the hour-long ferry ride in choppy seas. SAM Helicopters flies passengers from Naples airport to the island in 15 minutes.
04 Don't expect fine sandy beaches. Rocky coastline is the norm, so bring appropriate footwear.
05 Do expect fabulous restaurants at bathing spots. La Fontelina offers white-wine sangria to pass the time between dishes.
06 The Blue Grotto is the island's main attraction but other sea caves are worth a visit. Hire a wooden "gozzo" boat complete with sunshade and make the rounds.
07 Capri is lemon heaven. Try the local limoncello liqueur from Casa Mariantonia, which makes the genuine article using only the best Sorrento lemons.
08 For the best pastry treats visit Sfizi di Pane in Capri's gourmand alley, Via le Botteghe.
09 A sunset aperitivo on the beach at Lido del Faro will have you reaching for the local property listings.
10 Privacy important during your stay? Ring the staff at Ville Esclusive and hire out Villa Leone in Anacapri.
