Munich

Munich is home to the world’s most famous beer bash - Oktoberfest, Bayern Munich soccer club and BMW, but there is much more if you look beyond such institutions. Be sure to check out Munich’s trendy neighbourhoods and small but perfectly formed club scene - just get your beer jargon right.

Essentials

01 A draft beer is ein helles, but a litre glass takes the feminine form - eine mass beer. And don’t forget to say the magic word: bitte (please).
02 Use the regional servus, not guten tag, as a greeting.
03 The best outdoor equipment and clothing shop in Germany is Schuster’s, located just off Marienplatz.
04 In summer, be sure to bring hiking boots. The Alps are so close, you can see them from the centre on a clear day.
05 Bring your trainers, too. There’s a wide path for cycling and running along the Isar river.
06 Although you can get almost anywhere by train or tram, you can cover more ground with a rented car. Our recommendation is Sixt car hire.
07 The airport has first-rate meeting facilities that could save you a downtown commute of at least 45 minutes.
08 The cinema on Nymphenburger Strasse shows English-language films, previewing new releases on Fridays at 23.15.
09 Don’t follow the fashion choices of Bavarian men - lederhosen and knee-length wool stockings in summer anyone?
10 If you’re feeling strong, squeeze your way into a beer-garden game of hakeln, an alternative to arm wrestling in which Bavarian men lock fingers and try to pull each other across the table.
